Jose “Jesse” Juarez’s journey and inspiration behind the Giving Florida Hope 11:11, Inc. charity organization.

Growing up on the south side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I was surrounded by many people experiencing homelessness. Raised by a single mother, we didn’t have much, but my mom always made sure we had what we needed. I have vivid memories of riding the city bus with her, often encountering people in need. Every time, without fail, I would see my mom reach into her purse and hand them some money. I used to ask her, "Why are you giving them our money?" Her answer was always the same: "What I give might not be much to us, but to them, it could mean everything."

As a child, I didn’t fully understand what she meant, but as I grew older, it became clearer. It wasn’t about the amount she gave, but the act of giving itself. She always said that if she could bring a smile to someone's face, then she knew she was doing the right thing. My mom never hesitated to help others, even if it meant we had to go without. She believed deeply that someone else’s need was greater than our own in those moments.

I’m not sure if she intended to teach me a life lesson, but she did. I learned that in times of need, we must help however we can, even if it costs us a little. This world desperately needs more compassion, and I am committed to passing that lesson on to my children. I truly believe that by offering people hope, they can overcome the struggles in their lives.

I don’t give to be recognized; I give because it’s the right thing to do, and it’s what I believe God wants of me. I will continue to give for as long as I can, and I trust that I’ll always be able to find a way to give. We must care for others as we care for ourselves, and in doing so, we can bring back the beauty and kindness that once filled this world—much like the world I remember from my childhood, where people looked out for one another.
